Character’s Background: To say that Ms. Lotto Takeda’s life was eventful would be to akin to saying that her name wasn’t unusual. Born in Okinawa as Shiwa Takeda, after her mother died from complications, her father quickly and silently into a depression. Fearing for young Shiwa, her grandparents hastily adopted her away from her father and took her into their home and raised her as they did her mother….more or less.
Living with her grandparents probably would be one of the key factors in how she would become. Her grandfather was a devourer of stories. Any story he ran across, weather it be in a book, on the TV as an anime, or just told from someone with the gift of gab, he actively sought out stories, perhaps as a reaction to being a retired reporter. This set up Shiwa’s love for stories, although she had a preference for manga more than the others. Her grandmother, however, probably had a bit more influence over her life. Shiwa’s grandmother was, to put simply, a gambler of most amazing skill. People called her, as they would call any woman with gambling skills, ‘Lady Luck’. It seems that any hand she was dealt, any die she threw and any bet that she made always won her money.
As the grandfather was out often, collecting stories to catalog on his website, “allyouneedtoknow.pwn” the grandmother would have to take care of the child Shiwa. This being said, there was no chance of this fiery woman stopping her betting. Shiwa was practically raised at the craps table. Her first words were ‘Hit me’, she learned to count from playing cards, and her favorite toys were her grandma’s lucky pair of black onyx dice. Eventually, Shiwa was taught all about the life of a gambler and a con, which she found that Shiwa had a knack to it. When it came to ‘gaming’, it was like Shiwa slipped on a mask and became ruthless, seeking the kill, even if she didn’t stand a chance. Shiwa fast learned the arts of the gambler, as well as how to con people and get away with it, which, yes, included violence.
As she grew in age, wisdom and skill, she distanced herself from her grandma. Weather it was intentional or not, Shiwa’s grandma distanced herself from Shiwa, for reasons unknown to Shiwa. Shiwa’s grandmother left to go on a country wide gambling trip when Shiwa was a third year. However, she never made it back. Shiwa’s grandmother was killed in an ‘act of random violence’ in the area of Iwadotai. Her grandfather, being the man that he was, moved them both to Iwadotai immediately to find the story behind her death. Needless to say, Shiwa found the story in The Dark Hour.
She was just conning some hapless teens in the back allies near the Port Station with a ball-and-cup con, when the change into The Dark Hour occurred. Needless to say, while confused, she was more miffed at not being able to just steal the money from the marks outright. Wandering around aimlessly, she naturally saw the tower. With the moon bright behind it, she was awestruck into distraction. Her distraction almost cost her a life as Shadows attacked her while she was staring at the dark beauty of The Dark Hour. Although she tried to fight back, her efforts were mainly in vain. Falling into unconsciousness, she cried out desperately; she cried out for her life, that she wanted to live.
She awoke later, in the back alley where she was attacked, a ‘bloody’ shovel in hand and no wounds on her body. She later received school transfer transcripts and a letter from the chairman, asking her to join SEES.
Character’s Personality: Shiwa normally has very good intentions. While she may have a temper, it is sort of slow to rise (unless you mention losing money to her). She doesn’t mean any cruelty in any of her actions. While she is good intentioned, she is a bit of klutz and often tends to tread on sensitive subjects, which leads to her lack of confidence in her ability to be a good person.
However, when met with the challenge of gambling, she transforms (in a manner of speaking) into her ‘Gambler Mode’. In the Gambler Mode, often symbolized by her favorite pair of orange Ovan-esque sunglasses being worn, she is much more confident in herself and her abilities. She becomes much looser with herself than she is normally. When in this ‘Mode’, she is focused only on her goals, usually money, and tends to screw anyone over in her way. Side note of some relevance: She tends to not acknowledge her ‘Gambler Mode’ exists, leading to some awkward conversations.
